About this grant
Founded in 1993, CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation is a dynamic global network of over 15,000 members across 188 countries. The organization is dedicated to strengthening civil society and promoting citizen engagement, particularly in contexts where democratic participation and freedom of association are under threat. Among its recent achievements are the publication of its annual State of Civil Society reports and the ongoing development of the CIVICUS Monitor — a vital resource offering real-time data and analysis on civic space worldwide. The grantee also connects and equips civil society actors through convenings, collaborative initiatives and the implementation of its 2022–27 strategic plan. During the grant period, the organization and its strategic partners will develop a system to detect early signs of civic space restrictions by building on the CIVICUS Monitor methodology and designing tools to support timely responses. The grantee is also preparing to host the first International Civil Society Week since the COVID-19 pandemic and will launch a new community cohort of civil society innovators, drawn from two decades of Nelson Mandela–Graça Machel Innovation Awards winners. CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation is headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa.
