About this grant
The City and County of San Francisco’s Kindergarten to College program was the first municipal children’s savings account program in the country. Since its inception in 2011, the program has opened savings accounts for more than 56,000 students, motivated thousands of low- and moderate-income families to save millions of dollars, and inspired replications in cities and states around the country. Last fall, researchers found that the program significantly boosted students’ on-time high school graduation and postsecondary enrollment, establishing a critical proof point for the children’s savings account movement. Renewal funding will support continued implementation and help the City and County of San Francisco prepare for the next phase of program operations, which will emphasize family outreach and engagement strategies as well as integration with California’s statewide college savings account initiative.
