About this grant

The Instituto de Energia e Meio Ambiente is a Brazilian think tank specializing in energy planning, electrical engineering and environmental law and policy. During the previous grant period, the grantee advanced renewable energy access in the Amazon by demonstrating the viability of solar-battery systems, mapping community energy needs and forging technical cooperation agreements with the government. It also identified regulatory, financial and data gaps that still limit universal access to electricity, especially for productive uses. It also developed a web platform with lessons from pilot projects and provided policy analysis. Over the next grant period, the grantee will further expand renewable energy access in the Amazon by helping to strengthen regulations, coordinate energy and sustainable community forest production policies, close data gaps, and develop environmentally responsible models for off-grid solar systems. These efforts aim to ensure both household and productive energy needs are met while supporting government accountability and long-term system sustainability.
