About this grant

International public and private finance for the energy transition increasingly lacks transparency and accountability, enabling the continued fossil fuel expansion. Urgewald is a German organization that conducts research, public education and advocacy on the environmental and human rights risks of energy and infrastructure projects by engaging commercial banks, private investors and multilateral development banks to shift capital away from fossil fuels towards sustainable alternatives. With prior Mott Foundation support, the grantee monitored implementation of the environmental and social policies at key multilateral development banks and supported civil society networks in Europe and Asia. With this grant, Urgewald will strengthen the integrity of energy transition finance by addressing multilateral development banks’ indirect support for fossil fuel expansion, reinforcing accountability frameworks for blended development finance and aligning commercial banking practices with climate goals.
