About this grant
The program goal is to strengthen the capacity of civil society actors to prevent and respond to digital rights violations in Latin America. Derechos Digitales addresses the growing misuse of surveillance technologies against journalists, human rights defenders and marginalized communities. As states across the region expand the use of spyware, facial recognition and social media monitoring without adequate legal safeguards, the grantee responds by generating authoritative evidence, advancing rights-based policy standards and training civil society defenders. Building on its leadership within the Al Sur Coalition and prior results in regional coordination, research and international advocacy, the grantee will: 1) monitor and document surveillance practices; 2) engage policymakers and global governance forums; and 3) provide training and technical support to those most at risk. Founded in 2005 in Chile, Derechos Digitales is an independent, nonprofit organization that works throughout the region. Its main objective is developing, defending and promoting human rights in the digital sphere.
