Violence Interruption and Community Advocacy

About this grant

This grant to the Hurley Foundation will allow Hurley Medical Center’s patient outreach advocate to provide community advocacy and violence-prevention support for Flint residents. As the region’s only level 1 trauma center, Hurley Medical Center serves families in crisis and uses the Patient Resource and Community Advocate program to connect victims of violence, their families, and other vulnerable residents to resources, crisis support and safety education. The program also strengthens violence interruption efforts through partnerships with community-based organizations and local law enforcement, gunlock safety education, emergency response training and outreach programs that promote safer decision-making among youth, adults and seniors. Hurley Medical Center’s ability to employ a culturally competent patient advocate helps build trust with residents, reduce barriers to support and serve as a bridge among medical care, public safety partners and the Flint community.
