About this grant

The United Way of Genesee County, in partnership with the Greater Flint Health Coalition and Community Foundation of Greater Flint, will establish and convene the Child Poverty Elimination Coalition as the community’s coordinating body for Flint’s child poverty strategy. The Coalition will bring together local organizations, advocates and executive leaders to establish a common understanding of child poverty in Flint, align efforts around the conditions that contribute to poverty and advance policy and systems changes that improve economic mobility for Flint children and families.A central focus will be establishing and tracking baseline data to understand the conditions facing Flint families and measure progress over time. Building on the research and dashboard developed by University of Michigan Poverty Solutions, the Coalition will maintain the dashboard, monitor key indicators and use the data to help partners identify priorities and measure the impact of local strategies. The Coalition will also engage local, state and national advocates working on direct cash, tax credits and other economic supports and help connect additional direct cash pilots in Flint to shared outcomes and evaluation. This work supports the Flint Area program’s Child Poverty and Policy Solutions strategy by creating a sustained community structure that connects data, local implementation and advocacy while aligning local, state and national resources around a common goal of reducing child poverty.
