Our Approach

The Mott Foundation is focused on expanding access to afterschool and summer learning programs in all 50 states. These programs provide opportunities for young people to learn, explore future career interests, form supportive relationships with mentors and adults, and develop skills to lead healthy lives.

We have three strategies to achieve our goals:

Informing policies and fostering programs and networks to expand access to afterschool.

Our grant funding supports:

• The 50 State Afterschool Network and national partners to increase afterschool access in the U.S.
• Research and public messaging to expand access to high-quality afterschool programs in communities.
• Model programs that demonstrate the impact of afterschool on student outcomes.

Advancing innovations that expand educational opportunities for young people in their communities.

Our grant funding supports:

• Mizzen Education, Inc., to reach more young people with high-quality afterschool programming.
• High-quality programs to share best practices for improving local access to afterschool.
• Research efforts that explore the impacts of afterschool on young people, families and communities.

Creating clear pathways and development opportunities for afterschool educators that support positive youth outcomes.

Our grant funding supports:

• Training and preparation for afterschool educators in Michigan to inform national strategies.
• Statewide and regional initiatives to recruit and retain high-quality K-12 educators through teacher residency programs within the afterschool field, with a focus on Michigan.
