“Mott Children’s Health Center is rooted in Mr. Mott’s philanthropy. When he started the Mott Foundation, one of the early focuses was children’s health. He was focused on making sure the children in Genesee County had access to care. This was in the 30s before Medicaid existed, so we were founded in 1939 to provide healthcare for children at no cost.
“We started as a pediatric and dental program, and we were so small that we operated out of Hurley. In the 1960’s we moved into our own building. Until the 70s, we were completely grant funded through Mr. Mott and the Foundation. Everything we have, and everything we are, started with him and his concern for the children of the county, and we’ve grown considerably since then. Over time, we’ve added programs and services. As the needs of the community have changed, so have our programs. One of our primary objectives is to fill the gaps in care for children in our community. This goes back to Mr. Mott’s original concern back in the 30s, and we’re still living that today.”
