About this grant
This grant will enable the Alfond Scholarship Foundation to continue the Harold Alfond College Challenge Program, recognized as the nation’s first statewide children’s savings account program. During the renewal grant period, the anticipated priorities and activities include program implementation and evaluation. In addition, the grantee will support broader field-building by sharing research findings from the first two grant periods to inform program design innovations both in Maine and nationally. Established in 2008 as a pilot program in Portland, Maine, the college challenge program automatically awards a $500 grant to every child born in the state to encourage educational savings and to foster aspirations for higher education.
