About this grant
The goal of the project is to promote philanthropy in Africa by generating new knowledge and building a cadre of experts, researchers and academics focused on African philanthropy, social investment and related disciplines. The Centre on African Philanthropy and Social Investment, a program of the University of the Witwatersrand, works to produce research on philanthropy, train a cadre of philanthropy professionals, and connect academic research and knowledge to the practice. Past support has enabled the Centre to: 1) host convenings; 2) produce research on philanthropy and social investment in Africa; 3) train and graduate doctoral students; and 4) provide short training programs. In addition, the Centre has also launched a podcast series to document experiences in philanthropy and social investment. During this grant period, the grantee will continue to train academics in philanthropy, host public lecturers and other learning events, produce research and publications to expand knowledge on philanthropy in the continent as well as introduce new training programs in response to the changing landscape. In addition, the Centre on African Philanthropy and Social Investment will continue to host podcasts to document the experiences of professionals in philanthropy and social investment and discuss research outcomes to make them more accessible.
