About this grant

Kara Solar Foundation is advancing a proven model of solar river transport that strengthens Indigenous cultures, protects rainforest ecosystems and builds technical and economic strength in remote Amazonian territories. Over the last grant period, the grantee maintained a fleet of solar-powered boats in Achuar territory in Ecuador, providing fuel-free trips that supported education, health access and cultural activities. The grantee also expanded its reach to Peru, Brazil and Suriname; deepened local technical capacity through multilingual training materials and workshops; and launched new technologies to build a resilient, community-led clean energy value chain. Over the next grant period, Kara Solar will scale its impact through: 1) expanding solar rivers networks; 2) developing productive solar technologies that support Indigenous livelihoods; and 3) establishing itself as a regional knowledge hub to spread solar mobility and energy sovereignty across the Amazon River basin.
