About this grant
Older coal-fired power plants are being retired across the country, including in Michigan. The Environmental Law and Policy Center sees an opportunity to transform many of these sites for parks, recreation and renewable energy generation. With this grant increase, the Center and its partners will make substantial progress in reimagining and redeveloping the Dan E. Karn coal plant site located in Bay County, Michigan. The project aims to establish grid-connected, large-scale solar energy generation, which will produce clean power, create jobs and generate property tax revenues. Additionally, it will create new parklands, conservation areas and outdoor recreation spaces while ensuring the protection of safe, clean and healthy water resources.
