About this grant

This grant increase and corresponding grant period extension will enable Michigan State University to continue documenting and promoting solutions that help America’s older industrial cities address chronic fiscal stress and advance overall fiscal health. In 2023-24, the grantee began collecting fiscal data on water infrastructure for about 350 Michigan municipalities in order to assess the condition and sustainability of these systems. During the extended grant period, the grantee will: 1) complete the analysis; 2) recommend strategies; and 3) provide technical assistance to help municipalities develop asset management plans that identify long-term system needs — including operating and maintenance strategies — and ensure safe and reliable water service.
