About this grant
Black Sash Trust’s goal is to address the systemic injustices faced by poor and marginalized people in South Africa. To this end, the grantee aims to ensure that all people in South Africa have access to their socioeconomic rights, as enshrined in the Constitution of South Africa. Past support allowed the grantee to: 1) continue working with advice offices in monitoring the implementation of social grants in South Africa; 2) convene a civil society working group on basic income support; 3) uncover corruption in South Africa’s social grants system; and 4) litigate to ensure the government delivers on its constitutional rights relating to social security. This grant will assist the grantee to continue this work with the advice offices. The grantee will work toward ensuring that the right to social security and social assistance is protected, realized and advanced. The grantee was founded in 1955 by a group of women who were fighting for the recognition of human rights for all in South Africa. The Black Sash Trust aims to contribute to the creation of a society that has effective laws and comprehensive social protection for the most vulnerable.
