About this grant
Carnegie Endowment for International Peace has long standing work producing research and actionable ideas to promote international cooperation and advance knowledge surrounding some of the world’s most challenging problems. While this grant represents a continuation in substance of previously supported activities, it introduces a new project phase and title — Civic Action: Finding Opportunities Under Pressure — that reflects an expanded analytical agenda responding to intensifying geopolitical, technological and financial pressures on civil society defenders worldwide. Through its Democracy, Conflict and Governance Program, the grantee will convene two key global networks — the Civic Research Network and the Digital Democracy Network — that bring together scholars, civil society defenders and technologists to analyze emerging civic trends and inform policymaking. Under the new project phase, the grantee will examine how civil society defenders are adapting to escalating repression, changing donor landscapes and new forms of youth driven mobilization while also exploring the implications of technology, AI and geopolitical competition for civic participation. The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is an independent research institution based in Washington D.C. with global centers and 170 experts throughout the world.
