Flint, Michigan — To help Flint area communities complete nonmotorized trail expansion projects, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation granted $1,030,000 to Genesee County to cover funding gaps for four trail segments.

The four projects and the amounts are as follows:

  • $280,000 to support the Silver Lake Road Trail in Fenton.
  • $270,000 to support the second phase of the Perry Road Trail in Grand Blanc Township.
  • $330,000 to support the Embury Cook Road Trail in Grand Blanc Township.
  • $150,000 to support the Iron Belle Trail Pathway in Burton.

“Safe, connected trails and sidewalks are an excellent resource for residents of all ages to enjoy physical activity and get to work, schools, parks, neighborhoods and other community destinations,” said Ridgway White, president and CEO of the Mott Foundation. “We’re pleased to help close the funding gaps for these four projects, and we look forward to seeing how we can support more trail expansion throughout the county.”

The Mott Foundation is working with the Genesee County Metropolitan Planning Commission to identify additional needs in Flint and Genesee County. The goal is to connect communities through nonmotorized, multimodal trails.

Adopted in 2020, the Genesee: Our County, Our Future master plan emphasizes the importance of a reliable, efficient and accessible transportation network for all residents. Over the past decade, more than 19 miles of nonmotorized trails and sidewalks have been added across the county.

To continue building on this progress, Genesee County is hosting the Flint and Genesee County Trails Symposium from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, at the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library. The event is open to residents and community stakeholders to share input and explore opportunities for future trail and sidewalk expansion.

“This investment in local trail development projects reflects our common purpose and commitment to healthy, livable and safe communities in Genesee County,” said Delrico J. Loyd, chairman of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners. “These efforts would not be possible without the strong partnerships we’ve built with community organizations, volunteers and local leaders.”

Registration is required for the trails symposium. To register, visit https://gcmpc.org/flintandgeneseecountytrails. Residents also can provide input through an online survey at the same website.
