First grant

The Mott Foundation’s first grant, for $1,000, was given to Christ Episcopal Church, or Christ’s Mission, as it was then known. Founded in Flint in 1902, the church now houses the Community Enrichment Center, a nonprofit, nonsectarian community hub serving children and adults.

First international grant

Mott’s first grant for international work helped establish a weather station on the Greenland ice sheet, where scientists studied how ice influenced regional weather patterns. The $500 grant confirmed the Foundation’s willingness to consider groundbreaking research with international and environmental implications.
