Mizzen empowers educators to design and deliver engaging afterschool programs that spark curiosity, joy, and a love of learning for all children and youth.

Supported by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, Mizzen is available at no cost to afterschool programs and individual educators.

To remain aligned and connected with the needs, opportunities and continuous quality improvement priorities of the afterschool field, Mizzen by Mott has identified the Operations Manager role to support the organization’s strategic objectives related to the systems and processes to implement efficient business operations.

About Mizzen by Mott

Mizzen by Mott is currently a special project of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. The organization has applied for 501(c)(3) charitable status, with plans for Mizzen by Mott to become a stand-alone organization, Mizzen Education, Inc., by June 30, 2023. As a result, the workplace culture will be that of a dynamic start-up organization with team members proactively establishing systems and processes to support Mizzen Education’s growth and development as a high-performing organization.

About the Position

The Operations Manager will be responsible for working with the Mizzen team to design, implement and manage operational process and procedures, including back-office services management, internal accounts payable/receivable functions, expenses tracking and reporting, establishment of best business practices and general oversight of the organization’s administrative functions. The OM will be a human-centered youth development enthusiast with a passion for building systems, creating organizational processes and establishing operational excellence. This is a remote working position with some travel required for organizational retreats during the year. Candidates based out of California, Michigan and/or Indiana are preferred.


  • In collaboration with the CEO, design, implement and manage operational processes for Mizzen’s establishment as an independent 501(c)(3), ensuring compliance with all legal business requirements.
  • Establish processes for managing back-office service partners providing HR, benefits, payroll and financial services.
  • Communicate with and manage Professional Employer Organizations (PEO) in their providing of HR, payroll and benefits services to the organization.
  • Research and advise on innovative best practices related to human resources and general staff supports.
  • Establish and manage accounts payable and accounts receivable processes and procedures.
  • Supervise procurement protocols and vendor contracts.
  • Organize and manage fiscal documents such as invoices, credit card statements and company bills.
  • Supervise invoicing protocols and submission of invoices and reimbursements.
  • Manage credit card expenses reconciliation and maintain spending supporting documentation.
  • Work with and manage the organization’s various vendors and services contracts such as storage, WeWork office use and organizational supplies and equipment inventory.
  • Work with CEO and the Mizzen team on general administrative related projects.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with various Mott Foundation departments on projects and activities related to accounts payable, human resources and expense tracking and management.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • At least 5 years’ experience in operations.
  • Experience in HR and finance administration.
  • Experience in establishing new systems for managing business practices such as accounts payable, payroll and HR.
  • Experience vetting and managing vendors.
  • Understanding of nonprofit accounting and operations.
  • Preferred understanding of the education and youth development community.
  • Ability to work, communicate and collaborate in a 100% remote environment.
  • Able to coordinate multiple demands, from multiple stakeholders and partners, in a dynamic and fast-paced environment with timely results.

Collaboration and Coordination

Beginning July 1, 2023, the Operations Manager will work closely with various back-office and managed services that will provide the following supports as Mizzen by Mott transitions to an independent 501(c)(3) organization under the name Mizzen Education, Inc.

  • Human Resources, Benefits and Payroll Services.
  • Accounting Services.
  • Information Technology (IT) Services.
  • Insurance Services including General Liability, Worker’s Comp, Directors and Officers Insurance and other organizational level insurance coverages.

Salaries and Benefits

Minimum salary is $75,000, with a comprehensive and competitive benefits package.
