About

Jenifer Fernandes Veloso is a first-generation Brazilian American and a lifelong city of Flint resident. Veloso’s dedication to her community-focused work began while working as a trauma nurse at Hurley Medical Center in Flint. She credits her work there — providing bedside care to underserved populations and victims of violence — for helping her understand how to advocate for her fellow human beings through storytelling and photography. Her experiences as a nurse and as a person raised in a trilingual home created a diverse and multifocal view of the world, enhancing her abilities to photograph culturally complex and intimate moments.

Veloso is a self-taught photojournalist. She previously served as social justice editor and photojournalist for Flintside and as a multimedia specialist intern for MLive/The Flint Journal. Before accepting a full-time role at Mott, she did freelance writing and photography for the Foundation.

She is fluent in English, Portuguese and Spanish. She earned two degrees from the University of Michigan-Flint: a Bachelor of Arts in health sciences and a Bachelor of Science in nursing.

Outside of work, Veloso enjoys reading several books at once, yoga and mindfulness practice, Olympic weightlifting, backpacking trips, kayaking, visiting her family in Brazil and spending quality time with the most important people in her life.
