About this grant

Established in 1993, CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation is an international alliance dedicated to strengthening citizen action and civil society throughout the world. With members from 129 countries, the grantee’s work includes researching the state of civil society in more than 50 countries, raising awareness and education about civil society; and mobilizing quick, public responses to situations where the freedom of civic association is threatened. Of particular note in 2010 was the passage of a Special Resolution on the Freedom of Association and Assembly by the United Nations Human Rights Council, largely due to the efforts of CIVICUS; and the publication of a seminal report on global trends in civil society entitled “Civil Society: The Clampdown is Real.” In 2011, the grantee will continue to strengthen civil society by working to protect civil society rights; promoting good practices within the civil society sector; and influencing government, international institutions, and private sector policies and practices.
