About this grant
Each year, the Summer Youth Program provides funding for up to 30 agencies to operate programs focusing on improving the job skills of Flint area youth and, in selected cases, keeping younger children and youth engaged in safe activities during the summer months. This grant will enable the Genesee Chamber Foundation to continue to develop and implement summer programs that provide education and employment opportunities for approximately 400 Flint area youth ages 14-18, as well as provide productive activity for approximately 4,000 youth between the ages of 5-13 years. The 2006 program will emphasize a systemic approach to workforce development, beginning with career preparation and the creation of educational development plans for each participant; establish stronger partnerships between area employers and the Summer Youth Program; develop an understanding of and support for community service; and provide leadership training designed to connect participants with further leadership development opportunities elsewhere in the community.
