About this grant
South Carolina’s exceptional freshwater ecosystems – such as its blackwater rivers, cypress/tupelo swamps, bottomland hardwood forests and the unique Carolina Bays elliptical wetlands – face threats from a number of sources. These include the loss of federal wetland protections; pollution from storm water runoff; and alteration due to the operation of hydropower dams. This grant will enable the Coastal Conservation League to continue to build support for state and local wetland and water quality protection efforts and engage in the relicensing proceedings of federally regulated hydropower facilities in the state. With previous support, the league worked to prevent the weakening of state water quality protections and helped achieve fish passage and restored flows on two rivers through the dam relicensing process.
