About this grant

The University of KwaZulu-Natal was formally established in 2004, as a result of a merger between the Universities of Durban Westville and Natal in South Africa. The Centre for Civil Society, established at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, promotes the study of South African civil society as a legitimate area of scholarly activity. It generates and shares knowledge on topical issues related to civil society, builds partnerships between academia and civil society, and facilitates debate and reflection on the nature of civil society. Past support enabled the grantee to host events to discuss civil society challenges in the KwaZulu-Natal province. Additionally, the grantee supported community scholars to encourage interaction between academia and practice; generated academic knowledge on civil society; conducted research on social, environmental, and economic justice; and taught courses in the development studies Master’s program. This grant will enable the grantee to continue implementing these activities.
