About this grant
The program goal is to strengthen local-level democracy and civil society in Serbia by supporting the development of the Balkan Community Initiatives Fund – Serbia, an indigenous grantmaking organization that provides small grants to local nongovernmental organizations. Over the next two years, the grantee will distribute more than $600,000 annually in grants to community-based nonprofits in Serbia, provide networking and training opportunities to these organizations, and promote philanthropy at local and national levels. In addition, the grantee will build its organizational capacity and sustainability through long-term financial planning, diversification of its funding base, and the development of an endowment. During 2011-2013, the grantee continued to be the leading grantmaker for community-based nonprofits. In 2012, the grantee made over 120 grants totaling approximately $793,000. The grantee also strengthened the philanthropic field by playing a leadership role in the newly established Serbian Philanthropic Forum. The fund is a registered grantmaking organization in Serbia and works through a core staff based in Belgrade.
