About this grant
Established in 1998, the Steve Biko Foundation is a community development organization inspired by the legacy of Bantu Stephen Biko, one of the founders of the black consciousness movement in South Africa. Its main objective is to encourage active citizenship and social action among the youth in politics, culture, and the economy. In the past two years, the grantee hosted public lectures and seminars on various topical issues including xenophobia, launched the Steve Biko Centre — a community center erected in Biko’s hometown of Ginsberg in the Eastern Cape Province — and piloted the Frank Talk program to promote public education and discourse between young professionals. This grant will support the Steve Biko Foundation to continue to host public lectures, seminars, and dialogues that educate young people about the history of the country and the Bill of Rights. The grantee will also continue to support programs that promote arts and culture, economic justice, and social development.
