About this grant
The Democracy Development Programme works to promote democracy in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa by encouraging community participation in local decisionmaking processes and good governance by local authorities. The Training of Local Government Councillors and Communities in KwaZulu-Natal project supports community participation processes and builds a culture of democracy and cooperation at the local level through training local government officials, traditional leaders, and ward committee members elected to represent the interests of communities at the local level. The project also creates spaces for dialogue between communities and their local municipal representatives. Mott support over the past two years assisted the grantee to set up engagement forums to improve communication between communities and municipalities in the province. Over the next two years, the grantee will continue to promote community participation in local governance processes, strengthen governance among partner municipalities, and expand its work to the Western Cape province.
