About this grant

Friends of the Earth is the U.S. affiliate of an international network of environmental organizations based in 70 countries. Through this project, it works to advance environmental and social standards of key international development finance institutions and ensure that financing for renewable energy is democratically governed and adheres to globally recognized environmental and social standards. The grantee’s work over the last grant period contributed to improvements of Chinese policies governing their lending to developing countries. In addition, it played an important role in the development of the United Nations’ Green Climate Fund’s first year of projects addressing greenhouse gas mitigation. During this grant period, the grantee will continue its work addressing Chinese-led development finance institutions, such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the New Development Bank. It will also work to advance transparency and accountability as well as address environmental, social, and developmental impacts of other public development finance institutions, including the United States’ Overseas Private Investment Corporation, the African Development Bank, and the Green Climate Fund.
