About this grant

The Karoo Centre for Human Rights promotes democracy and assists rural communities understand and access their rights.This grant renewal will enable the center to offer a two-year training program for paralegals in collaboration with the Walter Sisulu University; provide organizational development support in areas such as financial management, governance and general management to staff and advice committees in 45 advice offices in the Western, Eastern and Northern cape provinces; and explore options for the provision of legal advice to people living with HIV/AIDS.Recent accomplishments included training 30 paralegals on various modules relating to law and human rights; providing mentoring and support to community-based advice offices; developing a strong network of paralegals and advice offices within the three provinces; educating communities about their rights and how to access them; and conducting research to establish the extent to which the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS are protected with a view to developing programs that address the needs of this target group.
