About this grant
The project goal is to: (1) support democratic governance and strengthen democratic political institutions in Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Romania, and Bulgaria; and (2) advance cross-border cooperation in this region with the aim of promoting the political, social, and economic development necessary to ensure long-term stability. To achieve these goals, the German Marshall Fund of the United States set up a grantmaking fund, called the Balkan Trust for Democracy, which operates as a project of the grantee through an office in Belgrade. The trust is supported by the grantee, the United States Agency for International Development, the Mott Foundation, various European governments, and other European and American private foundations, with the goal of attracting other donors to the trust over time. Since its establishment in August 2003, the trust has made more than 300 grants totaling over $8 million.
