Community Development in Ukraine Through Community School Programs

About this grant

Beginning with seven schools in 2003, the Ukrainian Step by Step Foundation has expanded the number of community schools to 447 in 25 of Ukraine’s 27 regions by mid-2010. Hundreds of school teachers and administrators have received training on community schools through regional teacher training institutes using curricula that were developed by the grantee. Over the next three years, the grantee will expand the program to another 360 schools; promote the adoption of international quality standards; work with education officials and regional teacher training institutes to improve and expand the community school curriculum; advocate for policy changes that will institutionalize the best practices of community schools; and assemble, develop, and maintain an online database of resources on community school development. The Ukrainian Step by Step Foundation was created as an independent foundation in 1999 with the aim of facilitating educational development and innovative educational initiatives in Ukraine.
