About this grant
The UNESCO Oliver Tambo Chair of Human Rights, based at the University of Fort Hare, was established through funding by UNESCO to advance human rights, respect for democratic values, peace, and social justice. Mott provided support to implement a project to train and build the capacity of local government officials, traditional leaders, and community representatives to understand their respective roles, responsibilities, and duties at the local level of government. This renewal grant will support the continuation and further development of this project through ongoing dialogues, trainings, capacity building, and research. The University of Fort Hare is based in Alice in the Eastern Cape, and is one of the oldest and most respected of the historically black universities in the country.
