About this grant
The program goal is to increase the responsiveness of government bodies in Ukraine at the national, regional, and local levels. The Civil Society Institute will conduct detailed monitoring of legislation impacting nonprofit organizations and people’s rights and freedoms while also educating legislative officials about effective lawmaking procedures. It will work with local and regional partners to promote informed public participation in decisionmaking aimed at improving community development outcomes. It will also seek to train a new generation of independent policy professionals capable of carrying on and expanding this work. In the period 2008-2010, the grantee analyzed over 150 pieces of legislation and prepared over 50 detailed analytical briefs on issues related to local territorial development, while participating in a similar number of public policy discussions. Founded in 1997, the Civil Society Institute supports the development of civil society in Ukraine through public legal education, policy analysis, and promotion of participatory local development.
