About this grant

In 2005, the Flint Institute of Music completed a major renovation and expansion of the Dort Music Center on the Flint Cultural Center campus to increase its capacity to better serve students and patrons. During the past year, the institute provided instruction, programming, and concerts for over 228,000 attendees. Increasing operating costs, expanded programming and outreach activities, cutbacks in state funding, and a greater demand for tuition assistance are increasing challenges for the institution. This grant will provide operating support to the Flint Institute of Music to allow it to diversify and improve the quality of programs offered by its Flint School of Performing Arts, expand outreach efforts into local K-12 schools, attract more nontraditional students and audiences, continue support of the Flint Symphony Orchestra, and hire another staff person for its development office.
