About this grant

Established in 1989, the Community Law and Rural Development Centre has a network of 30 advice offices that provide free legal advice and other services related to accessing socioeconomic rights to poor communities in rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa. Past support assisted the Community Law and Rural Development Centre to train and mentor paralegals within advice offices, recruit and train management committees for the 30 advice offices in its network, and collaborate with other institutions to seek ways for these advice offices to remain sustainable. This grant will support the grantee to continue to strengthen advice offices through the training of paralegals and management committees; assist advice offices to register as independent institutions to improve their chances of raising funding from government and other sources; and to position itself as an African Centre of Excellence for community access to justice and related research, education, and training.
