About this grant

This grant will enable ISAR to support public participation in environmental decisionmaking processes at the community level in Belarus. Through its representative office in Minsk, ISAR provides small grants and information resources to local grassroots groups that address environmental issues.During the past five years, ISAR distributed 116 grants totaling $208,000 to environmental groups in more than 40 Belarusian cities and towns. The grants supported projects ranging from environmental education and ecotourism to habitat protection and environmental advocacy initiatives.ISAR was founded in 1983 as the Institute for Soviet and American Relations to encourage citizen diplomacy and facilitate exchange between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Its current mission is to support citizen activists and grassroots non-governmental organizations in their efforts to create just and sustainable societies by building advocacy skills, supporting community environmental problem-solving initiatives, galvanizing international environmental campaigns and increasing public participation in environmental decisionmaking.
