About this grant

This grant provides continued partial support to Independent Sector for a national panel to study ways of strengthening the nonprofit sector including philanthropic institutions. The panel was convened in 2004 and issued recommendations aimed at improving the oversight and governance of charitable organizations in two reports in 2005 and 2006. Many of these recommendations became law in charitable reform provisions of the Pension Protection Act of 2006. Subsequently, the panel appointed an advisory committee which developed a set of 33 Principles for Good Governance and Ethical Practice. These principles will be released at Independent Sector’s fall 2007 conference. Grant funds will support the preparation, printing, and initial dissemination of two separate reports: (1) a brief practitioner guide for nonprofit staff and board members; and (2) a detailed reference guide of both the principles and the panel’s work for self-regulation system administrators and scholars.
