About this grant

South African History Online is a live Web site committed to promoting and popularizing the study of South African history and culture that challenges and corrects the distortions and biases of the country’s colonial and apartheid past. It is specifically, although not exclusively, aimed at students and provides research and other support material for teachers, academics, and educators. The site is widely accessed and has been adopted in some schools as part of the history curriculum. Mott provided support to enhance the capacity of the staff, strengthen the research, expand the Web site, and widen its reach. This grant increase will support the grantee to update its online materials to comply with the new schools’ curriculum introduced in 2008. In light of the recent xenophobic attacks and school violence, it will also produce educational materials that advance social cohesion and the values of the Constitution, particularly tolerance, gender equality, democracy, and adopting nonviolent means to resolve conflicts.
