About this grant

The program goal is to promote effective public oversight and participation in decisionmaking in Ukraine. The Open Society Foundation – Ukraine will regularly monitor and distribute findings about the performance of Ukrainian national legislative and executive authorities and political parties. It will support regional partners focusing on local government, with particular emphasis on mechanisms for enhancing local development strategies. The grantee will further develop its own training capacity to educate local governments and nongovernmental organizations on effective use of public participation mechanisms. During 2009-2010, the grantee successfully expanded its watchdog functions to encompass national-level executive and legislative bodies. Through a new Web site, a variety of publications, and over 100 print and broadcast media stories, the grantee’s monitoring reports contributed to greater public awareness of the operations of the country’s democratic institutions. Since 2001, the grantee has promoted participatory democracy and an open society in Ukraine.
