About this grant

Rhodes University was founded in 1904 and is one of the oldest universities in South Africa with a reputation as a centre of excellence. The Rhodes University Legal Aid Clinic: Advice Office Project is part of the law faculty at Rhodes University, and its main aim is to improve access to justice in poor areas. Its activities include assisting poor people with legal advice and related services and supporting paralegal advice offices in the Eastern Cape provinces. Past support enabled the clinic to provide training and mentoring support to advice office paralegals; provide financial support to select advice offices; and assist clients requiring legal support and representation. This grant will support the Rhodes University Legal Aid Clinic to continue to train and mentor advice office workers, and to provide financial support to advice offices. The clinic will also offer an off-site service to advice offices to allow them to access professional advice from attorneys when dealing with complicated legal matters.
