About this grant
The Institute for Healing of Memories was created to contribute to the healing of individuals and communities affected by the political conflict and violence during apartheid and to share South Africa’s experience of dealing with its past with the broader international community. The core program is its Healing of Memories workshops, which provide a safe space for dialogue and openness to deal with issues such as reconciliation, forgiveness, dealing with the past, restorative justice, peace building, and conflict resolution. It has applied the same methodology to other challenges facing South Africa including criminal violence in prisons, refugees, and HIV/AIDS. Past achievements include working with youth to teach them about the past and reconciliation; conducting healing workshops for interfaith communities, refugees, prisoners, and people infected by HIV/AIDS; and getting accreditation from a South African university for its training programs.
