About this grant

The role of community organizing has taken on increased importance in promoting strategies that will result in equitable rebuilding plans in areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. Even as they are being called on to do more work, the staff of community-based organizations in Louisiana and other states affected by the storm also are coping with the loss of their own homes and communities. This grant will enable the Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation to provide resources so that local community organizers can apply for short-term sabbaticals. The Organizers Renewal Fund will award grants of up to $3,000 for organizers to take a short leave of absence from work to rest. The foundation was established in the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita to provide resources for the relief, recovery and betterment of Louisiana’s people and communities. It works with private, nonprofit organizations.
