About this grant
This grant to the Flint Institute of Music will provide continued support for the annual Tapology Tap Dance Festival for Youth held on the Flint Cultural Center campus. The festival is a collaborative effort with Tapology, Inc., to introduce children, ages 8 to 18, to the art of tap dance and offer instruction by professional artists to aspiring young dancers. Other partners include the Flint Public Library, local media, and other cultural center organizations. Students from dance studios throughout Michigan and other states attend workshops and receive mentoring from professional dancers from around the country. Several hundred Flint public school students are brought to the campus to learn about the history of tap, receive tap instruction, and gain an appreciation for the music and culture it represents. The festival also includes a student dance competition and public performance by the professional dancers.
