About this grant
The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan distributes surplus food to the hungry in 22 counties in eastern Michigan. Through a network of 380 partner agencies, the food bank distributed 15 million pounds of food in 2005; however, this represents only a fraction of the needs of low-income families, children and the elderly in its service area. The food bank is at its capacity in the amount of food it can store and process in its current 42,000 square foot facility. This grant will provide partial support to the food bank in adding 7,000 square feet of refrigerated and freezer space to its current facility. This additional temperature-controlled space will allow the food bank to take advantage of the increasing availability of nutritious, fresh produce and frozen products. Following the expansion, food distribution will increase 10 percent and the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan will have the capacity to meet area needs for the next 15 years.
