About this grant
The project goal is to build support in Serbia and the Balkan region for constructive efforts to deal with the legacies of the wars of the 1990s in the former Yugoslavia. With a focus on women activists and local women’s groups as catalysts of change in this process, during 2009-2011, Women in Black carried out a number of interrelated activities designed to engage women in transitional justice, including organizing visits to memorials and commemorations of war crimes sites, monitoring and raising public awareness of war crimes trials, and providing training and support to women activists across Serbia. In 2011-2013, the grantee will continue these activities and focus on providing a diverse range of educational and awareness-raising activities in order to reach a broader audience. The grantee will also expand its cooperation with women activists in Bosnia, Croatia, Montenegro, and Kosovo. Based in Belgrade, Serbia, Women in Black was established in 1991 as a network of women activists who opposed the wars in the former Yugoslavia.
