About this grant
The project goal is to deepen democratic values in Serbia and the Balkan region by strengthening the rule of law, respect for human rights, and civic participation. To this end, Women in Black increases the active role of women in constructive efforts to deal with the legacies of the wars of the 1990s in the former Yugoslavia, bolsters women’s participation in social and political decisionmaking processes, and expands women’s impact on shaping post-conflict society and civil society in Serbia and the wider region. During 2011-2013, the grantee carried out a number of interrelated activities designed to engage women in transitional justice, including organizing visits to memorials and commemorations of war crimes sites, monitoring and raising public awareness of war crimes trials, and providing training and support to women activists across Serbia. In 2013-2015, the grantee will continue these types of activities and focus on providing a diverse range of educational and awareness-raising activities in order to reach a broader audience. The grantee will also expand its cooperation with women activists in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, and Kosovo. Based in Belgrade, Serbia, Women in Black was established in 1991 as a network of women activists who opposed the wars in the former Yugoslavia.
