About this grant
In 2006, the Mott Foundation made a grant to Colonnades Theatre Lab of South Africa for development of a play about the interpreters who staffed the post-apartheid Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The play, “Truth in Translation”, views South Africa’s past and present through the eyes of these interpreters, who translated testimony before the commission into the nation’s 11 official languages. As part of the production’s United States tour in the summer of 2007, the Flint Cultural Center Corporation will host the theater company for a one-week Flint residency, including free public performances, interactive workshops with community members, South African films screened at the Flint Institute of Arts, and a variety of other activities related to the Midwest premier of “Truth in Translation”.
