About this grant

The program goal is to strengthen the capacity of nongovernmental organizations in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia to influence public policy at the regional, national, and European Union levels. To this end, the Stefan Batory Foundation will survey the needs and capacities of national-level networks, coalitions, and umbrella organizations of nonprofits involved in advocacy work; provide tailor-made grantmaking and technical assistance programs; and facilitate networking among its grantees. In addition, the foundation will strengthen its capacity to design and manage international grantmaking programs. The foundation was established in 1988 by the American philanthropist George Soros and a group of Polish democratic leaders. For over 18 years, the foundation has been the primary nongovernmental source of funding for hundreds of Polish nonprofit organizations. The foundation has expanded its programs to other countries in the region, including Belarus, Moldova, and Ukraine.
