About this grant

This renewal grant will provide continued support to the Sphinx Organization to offer a continuum of music instruction to underserved students in Flint, Michigan. The Sphinx Overture Program, which introduces students to classical music and violin, will serve all Flint public elementary schools. The program will provide students with free, afterschool group violin lessons. Music education supports cognitive stimulation and learning, and literacy skill development which are important for children exposed to lead. Through a partnership with the Flint Institute of Music, students from the program will be eligible for additional private lessons and more advanced violin lessons and classes at no cost. In addition, Sphinx Overture students and their families have access to a range of other cultural experiences and enrichment activities including artist in residence workshops and performances.
