About this grant

This grant will allow the Sphinx Organization to offer a continuum of instruction to low-income students in Flint, Michigan. The grantee has gained national attention making classical music accessible and more relevant to young people of color. This project will build on Sphinx programming already in Flint, by offering elementary students the opportunity to continue their music study in partnership with the Flint Institute of Music. Sphinx overture program graduates will be able to take violin lessons and classes at the music institute at little or no cost to students. In addition, the Harlem Quartet, a premier ensemble comprised of Sphinx national competition winners, will come to Flint for a one-week residency. These experienced artists will provide master classes, lessons, and chamber music coaching to students and hold a free public performance for the community.
